Exhibition Info - 13 December 2021STARLITE exhibited at “SDGs Week EXPO 2021 – “Toilet Exhibition for Disaster Management.””
<Development Story and Background>
STARLITE developed the “Quick House,” a folding mobile toilet, based on the voice of female victims of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake who requested to make a temporary toilet more accessible. Since then, STARLITE has delivered more than 7,000 mobile toilets to local governments and, due to increasing awareness of disaster prevention in recent years, private companies and sectors are gradually deciding to stockpile the toilets.
Recent flood disasters led to an increase in the number of mobile toilet installations at evacuation centres. However, toilet related problems at evacuation centres still exist today. At “SDGs Week EXPO 2021 – “Toilet Exhibition for Disaster Management,”” STARLITE presented a concept of the toilet offering more comfort that STARLITE developed, using “Toilet Management Guideline at Evacuation Centres” released by the Cabinet Office in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
<Main Functions>
Safety for Women and Children
It is lockable and the toilet panels are robust. It is also well shielded and the silhouette of the user does not appear on the toilet. STARLITE is currently developing an improved toilet with the sensor-operated light for enhanced security. (Due to be released in April, 2022)
Security for Elderly and Disabled
There are sufficient spaces for caretakers to provide assistance. The toilet is barrier-free and can be equipped with handrails.
Pursuit of Health and Comfort
You can use the toilet as usual, maintaining good health at evacuation centres. STARLITE is currently developing the toilet with ventilation to extract odour and a cart to carry the Quick House easily. (Due to be released in April, 2022)
Variety of Uses
Three types of toilets are available, of which two can be used as a manhole toilet and the other can be used as either a manhole or container-based toilet. The latter can be used where a sewage system for the manhole toilet is not in place.
<Urgent Issue>
In “the Cabinet Office’s Guideline for Toilet Management at Evacuation Centres,” it is advised to secure 1 toilet per 50 people at times of natural disaster and 1 toilet per 20 people when the situation is expected to last longer based on the condition of temporary toilet installations for past disasters and the UN standards, etc. However, the number of mobile toilets that local governments have secured is not yet sufficient. STARLITE will continue to advise local governments and private companies and sectors to secure toilets for emergency uses.
