Brandnew Info - 26/05/2026 Starlite has received the 76th Industrial Technology Award from the Osaka Industrial Research Association.—Development of low-thermal-expansion resin for compressor seals

76th Industrial Technology Award

Our newly developed low-thermal-expansion resin for compressor seals has been awarded the 76th Industrial Technology Award. This award recognizes outstanding technologies that contribute to industrial development.

The judges commented, "To create functions that break the concept of a resin, the design, formulation, and molding techniques were optimized to improve the high linear expansion, which is a drawback of PTFE (fluororesin) caused by temperature changes. At the same time, the material's toughness (its resistance to cracking, impact, and deformation) was maintained, which would typically decline under such conditions. A resin material that successfully balances these seemingly conflicting properties was developed."

In recent years, efforts to achieve a carbon-neutral society have led to the increasing use of next-generation energy sources like blue hydrogen and blue ammonia, alongside carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Since these gases require high-pressure transportation and storage, highly airtight seals with extended service lives are critical components in the underlying gas compressors.

The material recognized in this award is used in labyrinth seals for turbo compressors, and its adoption as a metal substitute is rapidly accelerating for sliding components that require dimensional stability caused by temperature changes. We aim to expand into new applications in industrial sectors where lightweight design and chemical resistance are required.
